Nigeria have been scheduled to participate  in the Little League Regional Tournament in Poland next year.

District administrator for Little League Baseball in Nigeria, Kehinde Laniyan, said a camp had already been opened in Ibadan  where 14 players would be selected to represent Nigeria at the Under-15 tournament. He stressed that Nigeria would have the opportunity to take part in the next phase of the tournament in the US if the team succeeded in Poland.

Laniyan said, “A camping and coaching clinic is already on at the Lekan Salami Stadium in Ibadan with coaches from the US assisting us in  training  our youth team. Raymond Thomas and Gerard Hall are  helping us in the preparations. We have more than 200 children between the ages of nine and 15 at the camp. Fourteen of them will be selected for the competition coming up in July 2018 but the rest will continue with the training programme.

“If we succeed in Poland, we will qualify for the world series in the US in August 2018. We already have a network of local and international sponsors. We are backed by the US Embassy and other partners. Baseball is not popular like football in Nigeria but our effort will make it a household game soon. We have been given a piece of land by the Oyo State government to build a stadium and hostels.”
