Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike has said  the international polo tournament  to be hosted in the state in  2018 will promote the state’s  economy.

Wike,  who spoke during a courtesy visit by the  Port Harcourt Polo Club officials  to the Government House,  explained that the influx of  polo stars from different  parts of the world would be beneficial  to businesses  in the state.

He lauded the club for attracting  an international tournament to the state,  saying   the state government  would support the event.

Wike directed both  the sports and tourism ministries to work with the club to organise a tournament that all Nigerians would be proud of.

He said. “We will support the hosting of the international polo tournament. We will  partner  the organisers to place Port Harcourt on the international map once again.

“Outsiders are coming to host international tournaments and seminars in Rivers State because the state is peaceful. It is interesting that the entire world is coming to Port Harcourt to play polo.”

The governor urged the club to be apolitical, saying that they should concentrate  on sports and economic development.

President  of the club,  Mr Iyene Amapakabo, said the tournament would attract players from the United Kingdom, Argentina, Asia and South Africa .

Amapakabo solicited the support of the  state government, saying that the tournament would  attract economic and social benefits to the state.

While commending the governor for executing projects in the state, he assured Wike that the club would continue to support his administration.
