What is Aussie Flu? Vitamin C WON’T protect you from DEADLY virus, urges government

Flu outbreak in Australia has been the worst for 50 years, and has reportedly caused a number of deaths.

Professor Robert Dingwall warned Aussie flu could be the most serious outbreak of the the virus since the 1968 pandemic that killed more than a million people worldwide.

At least 170,000 cases of flu were reported during the Australian winter this year.

But, PHE has warned that vitamin C isn’t enough to prevent infection from the virus, which experts claim will make it to the UK.

PHE’s comments came after reports that a doctor was urging the public to take plenty of vitamin C, ahead of the flu appearing in the UK.

Dr David Jack told the Daily Star: “I really don’t think you can get enough of it.”

The flu jab remains the best protection we have against the influenza virus, PHE said.

It was crucial that the most at-risk individuals get protected before the flu season started, it added.

A PHE spokesperson told Express.co.uk: “There is insufficient evidence to support a recommendation for taking Vitamin C to prevent getting flu.

“The best way to protect against flu is to have the vaccine if you are eligible, eat a healthy balanced diet to maintain a healthy immune system, and practice good hygiene by catching coughs and sneezes in a tissue, throwing it in the bin and washing your hands.”

Earlier this year, Professor Dingwall told Express.co.uk that it was inevitable the Australian flu will reach the UK.

The NHS and PHE needed to be prepared, alert and flexible, for this year’s winter flu season, he added.

NHS chief Simon Stevens said in September that the NHS may not be able to cope with the pressure.

“The signs from Australia and New Zealand are that it has been a heavy flu season and many of the hospitals down there have struggled to cope,” Stevens told the NHS Expo conference in Manchester.

“I’m confident this is not just the biggest on record but the largest flu outbreak we’ve seen for some time.”
