The Prime Minister’s pitch deliberately sent her message through the pages of Left-leaning Sunday newspaper the Observer.

She reprised her new pledges to regulate markets that rip off consumers, let councils borrow more to build new homes, help families by again freezing fuel duty and spend more on public services as the era of austerity comes to an end.

She wrote: “I want voters who may have thought of themselves as Labour supporters to look at my government afresh.

“They will find a decent, moderate and patriotic programme that is worthy of their support.”

A Tory source said: “As Jeremy Corbyn drifts ever further to the Left we have rolled our tanks very firmly on to the centre ground.”

Mrs May was boosted yesterday by a poll showing voters far prefer her to rival Boris Johnson.

Thirty-two per cent, think she is the best person to run the Tory party compared to 17 per cent backing Mr Johnson, pollster Opinium found.

The poll also found both the Conservative and Labour parties emerged from annual conference season level-pegging, at 39 per cent each in terms of public support.
