Sport Utility Vehicle lovers in Nigeria have expressed excitement at the unveiling in Lagos, Nigeria’s commercial capital, of a Peugeot 3008, a new addition to the SUV segment.

Featuring a sleek design, the new SUV is said to combine robustness with elegance. Its assembler and promoted, PAN Nigeria Limited, is optimistic that the vehicle will do well and raise its market share in the country substantially.

Those that witnessed the launch of the 3008 in Lagos including a former Deputy Governor of Lagos State, Mr. Femi Pedro; the Executive Secretary/Chief Executive Officer, Lagos State Security Trust Fund, Dr. Abdurrazaq Balogun; and the Chairman, Nigeria International Security, Benjamin Wilcolt, were particularly thrilled that such an elegant SUV was assembled in the country.

They called on the government, private firms and individuals to be proud to use the vehicle in order to generate more jobs and boost the nation’s economy.

Speaking at the unveiling of the SUV in Lagos, the Chairman, Board of Directors of PAN, Alhaji Munir J’aafar, said the introduction of the new SUV was in response to the demand of Nigeria’s car lovers.

He said, “We have responded to the taste of our customers. We have succeeded largely and progressively growing our market shares. We are expanding our frontiers in the local market and our aspiration is to deliver leadership in auto sales in Nigeria.”

Pedro said it was a wise business decision by PAN to have launched the vehicle in Lagos as he noted that over 35 per cent of automobile sales in Nigeria were done in Lagos.

“I feel highly honoured and delighted to witness the revival of a great company. To see this company coming back to life is a source of joy,” he said

The Managing Director of PAN, Ibrahim Boyi, gave the safety and security features of the new SUV, saying the vehicle had been equipped with all the trappings of a luxury, safety, comfort and technology, adding that it would be competitively priced compared.

Compared to its predecessor, the new 3008 SUV has undergone some significant upgrade on the design front, according to him. It has already won 35 awards globally.

Commenting on the vehicle’s specific features, Boyi said, “Its sleek exterior, futuristic cabin and several unorthodox features take it on a journey to explore unchartered territories of the Sport Utility Vehicle segment.

“The vehicle is lighter, yet more agile and responsive than the previous generation model. This further disproves the common notion that higher displaced engines are more suitable for SUVs.

“Apart from its distinctive style, it represents the brand’s move towards improving efficiency while delivering an even greater power output compared to previous models.”

The Group Managing Director, ASD Group, Shehu Sani Dauda, said the Peugeot 3008 would compete with the Toyota Rav4 and similar vehiciles in the 4X4 segment even as he declared that the new vehicle was of higher quality and better price than the competition.

“The vehicle has been reinforced for the Nigerian road and it will be loved by a first time buyer; a small family – who can use it to take their kids to school and to a special outing. It is a car rightly placed in the market. Our products are of more quality and cheaper than the completion,” he said.

The Executive Secretary, Lagos State Security Trust Fund, Dr. Balogun, giving his impression about the new 3008, said, “I can say it is a nice compact car; its interior fully automated and it is alluring. The dashboard is very unique and looks more than what one would expect. With good price, spare parts and maintenance, it will be a good product for Lagos.”

The Chairman, Nigeria International Security, Benjamin Wilcolt, said, “The vehicle is beautiful. I’m really impressed. Government and private firms and individual should this vehicle and other Nigeria-assembled vehicles as official cars. This way, more jobs will be generated.”

The vehicle is equipped with the latest version of Peugeot’s i-Cockpit virtual dashboard, which features a 12.3-inch digital instrument panel and an 8.0-inch central touch-screen.

Other standard features in the Peugeot 3008 Active listed by the automaker on its website are speed limit recognition and recommendation, distance alert, driver attention alert, lane departure warning, front and rear parking sensors, reversing camera, leather sports steering wheel, cruise control with speed limiter, dual zone climate control, rear air vents and auto dimming rear-view mirror.

It also has Driver Sport Pack – which provides more responsive electric power steering, throttle mapping, gearbox response, engine sound, and instrument display.

There are the digital radio, Apple Carplay and Android Auto, smartphone charging plate and voice recognition for phone and radio as well as satellite navigation.

The Active and the mid-spec Allure and GT-Line variants are powered by a 121kW/240Nm 1.6-litre turbo petrol engine, with while a 133kW/400Nm 2.0-litre turbo diesel sits under the bonnet of the range-topping GT.

Both engines meet Euro 6 emissions standards, with the turbo petrol having a frugal combined fuel economy rating of 7.0L/100km and the diesel managing an even thriftier 4.8L/100km.

According to whichcar.com, there is just one transmission option in the range, a six-speed auto, which pushes power to the front wheels.
