Kevin Clifton and Karen Clifton were soon to mark three years of marriage before announcing their split following months of speculation about their breakup.
And six months on, the couple must now continue to work together on Strictly Come Dancing, which is in its fourteenth year.
While Karen is paired with Charles Venn for this year’s series, Kevin is partnered with Stacey Dooley.
But the former husband and wife were reunited on the first episode of the series, as they danced together for the professionals’ romantic routine to open the show.
While fans were thrilled to see the couple dancing with one another again, it’s wasn’t so plain-sailing for Karen to get to that stage.
The 36 year old said their split was “a big hit” and she’s now having therapy to cope with the anxiety caused by their separation.
In an interview with the Mail on Sunday, Karen explained: “I’ve taken a big hit. I had to realise that I’m 36 years old. I’m not a kid and it has taken me a lot of therapy and life coaching to get through this. I have found it really difficult.”
Karen said she found it very difficult to deal with their split, so much so that she now suffers from anxiety.
Kevin’s ex-wife explained: “It was an intense time that prompted anxiety. I found the split very hard to deal with and I panicked.
“We weren’t perfect but we were a normal couple who began to have rocky moments and we didn’t know how to handle it.”
She described Strictly as “the glue that kept us together” but the show’s demanding schedule from 6am to 11pm left them with no time together.
Karen continued: “Eventually we both accepted that we couldn’t make it work. It was too late. We thought we were compatible with one another and we thought our relationship was going to be the best thing. It turns out that it wasn’t.”
The Venezuelan beauty sought help from former Strictly pro Camilla Dallerup, who is helping her to take better care of herself.
She added: “I’d like to think that I can help inspire other women, too. I’m undergoing therapy twice a month and I have also been doing hypnotherapy to treat my anxiety. That has been really helpful.”
