The X Factor winner, who reached the final of the show alongside Gorka Marquez, took to Twitter to share her heartbreak after her mother sadly passed away in August this year.
Alexandra’s mum, Melissa Bell, was 53 and was the former lead singer of the Grammy Award winning R&B band Soul II Soul. She died months before, after struggling with ill health following kidney failure in 2008.
On Christmas day, Alexandra wrote on Twitter: “Not sure how to feel… it really is a weird one. As this night goes on into xmas day I just feel numb.
“But trying my best to do what she wanted… try and smile and make everyone else happy… x.”
She added: “A very merry Christmas to you all. Sending you all so much love on this day. For those who aren’t here with us- we must try our best to smile for them. Think of all the good times shared. Trying my best to stay positive for my loved ones. Have a great day guys. All my love – AB X.”
Alexandra released a statement earlier in the year about her mother’s tragic passing.
“It is with the heaviest and saddest of hearts that the family inform you our beautiful, funny and loving mum, Melissa Bell has passed away,” Alexandra’s statement read.
“Our beautiful mother gained her wings on Monday 28th August, a day that has changed out lives forever. We will never forget her unconditional love, support, charisma, strength and courage throughout her life.”
She added: “We are eternally proud and thankful to call her our mummy.
“We would be grateful if you could respect our privacy at this difficult time. Thank you. The Burke Family.”
While Alexandra was competing in the X Factor in 2008, Melissa was undergoing treatment for kidney failure.
She was forced to miss one of her performances, but left hospital to see the Hallelujah singer duet with Beyoncé and take the crown.
At the end of 2016, the Bad Boys singer asked her fans to pray for her mum, admitting she’d been struggling with ill health.
