Senators from southern part of the country have called om President Muhammadu Buhari, as a matter of urgency to convoke a meeting to commence the implementation of the recommendation of the 2014 National Conference reports.
The senators made this recommendation at a three-day forum of Southern Senators Forum Retreat in Calabar, the Cross State capital.
The forum, in a communiqué read by its chairman, Senator Hope Uzodimma on Saturday, stated, “We therefore urged President Buhari to convoke a meeting of the National Assembly leadership, Governors and the Leadership of State Houses of Assembly to a close door brainstorming session to commerce the implementation of the recommendation of the 2014 National Conference Report.
“We also urged the Leadership of the National Assembly, the Senate to bring up the 2014 conference report for consideration.
The communiqué further called on members of the Southern Senators forum to liaise with their colleges in the National Assembly to kick start the legislative process that can lead to the actualization of the above stated objectives.
Consequently, the communiqué noted that, “Why the Unity of Nigeria should not and cannot be compromise under any circumstance, it has become apparent that the foundation upon which the Nigerian Nation was rested as independence in 1960 have been eroded and there is need to return to the original dreams of true federalism of our founding fathers which was a product of negotiation, compromise and accommodation.
According to the communiqué, the southern senators also resolved that Nigeria and Nigerians have come a long way down the length and it has become imperative and in the interest of all to leave together as one united family.
