Veteran journalist Taye Ige says the renovated gym of the National Stadium, Lagos, will further help the country’s para-athletes win more medals in global competitions.

The HotSports Nigeria Limited boss lauded Friesland Campina WAMCO for turning the once dilapidated gymnasium complex into a world-class training facility, equipped with the best and latest training equipment, saying it would challenge the Nigerian Paralympic team to achieve more.

Ige said the journey that led to the complete overhaul of the gymnasium, built in 1972, began during a visit to the stadium by a top official of Friesland Campina WAMCO, who was stunned on seeing the archaic, dilapidated and unconducive atmosphere where the Paralympic team, which had won several medals internationally trained.

He stated, “Convinced that if the place is made conducive for the Paralympians, they can achieve more, Freisland Campina WAMCO adopted it (gym renovation) as one of their corporate social responsibilities to Nigeria’s sports development.

“The company also instructed us to spare no effort in sourcing for the best modern equipment from renowned, reputable sports equipment companies in the world and worked with our experts. The result is what we have today: a world-class Power Gym.”

Speaking further, Ige added, “We are happy and privileged to have our services retained by Friesland Campina WAMCO for this project; we are satisfied as a company that we were involved in the transformation of that facility.”
