Former Super Eagles coach, Adegboye Onigbinde, has backed the Super Eagles to win the 2018 African Nations Championship in Morocco.

Nigeria, who are making the final of the competition for the first time, play against hosts Morocco on Sunday in the final at the Stade Mohamed V, Casablanca.

The Eagles beat Sudan 1-0 on Wednesday through a lone goal from Gabriel Okechukwu while Morocco beat Libya 3-1 after extra time in the semi-finals to book a final clash with the Eagles.

Both teams are unbeaten in the competition having topped their groups with seven points each from two wins and a draw.

But the Moroccans have been the most prolific team in the tournament scoring 12 goals and conceding only two while Nigeria have scored seven goals and conceded two.

Eight of the Moroccan goals have come from the boots of Ayoub El Kaabi while Nigeria’s seven goals have been shared among five players with Anthony Okpotu and Okechukwu scoring two each.

Onigbinde, who spoke with our correspondent on the telephone during the week, said the Eagles can make the country proud by winning the tournament.

“The team have done well to qualify for the final of the competition and they can prove their mettle against the hosts in the final and win the competition,” he said.

“They have made history by reaching their first final since the competition started and will do better by winning the title against the hosts, who will be buoyed by their fans – as the North Africans are known to do.

“The coaches need to work on a few areas of the team to ensure that they are ready to face Morocco. I believe that if they do the right things, they would not have problems beating the North Africans and coming home with the trophy.”

The former Shooting Stars coach advised Eagles coach Salisu Yusuf to employ the right tactics for the match.

He said, “Every coach has his own formation for every match. Nigerians may criticise the team for not doing too well but they have reached the final and have the opportunity to win the title.

“The coach should make sure that he uses the right tactics and formation to make the victory possible. The Moroccans have played well in the competition and have showed that they want to host and win the tournament. But if the right tactics are used by Nigeria, the Moroccans can be beaten.”

Onigbinde believes that Eagles coach Gernot Rohr would have identified some of the players, who could fit into his plans for the Russia 2018 World Cup.

“The coach knows his opponents at the group stage of the World Cup and I believe he would have started planning for the competition from now. The CHAN is an avenue for him to observe the players and pick the ones who can fit into his plans to get the desired results in Russia,” he said.

“There is however more that needs to be done on the team to develop more technically-rounded players from the domestic leagues. Our leagues should have technical assessors who will observe the abilities of each player and pool them together for the benefit of the national team coaches.”
