Nkonib United of Ikot Ansa (ward eight) on Sunday won the  North-West Petroleum Youth Soccer tournament  following their 2-1 victory over  Ishie Pillars of ward six  at the Ishie ‘Maracana’ Stadium in Calabar.

Ten  teams  from the 10 wards of Calabar Municipality Local Government Area of Cross River State participated in the event.

Nkonib carted  home  the  trophy and N250, 000 prize money for their efforts.

The final, watched by a capacity crowd including political dignitaries and royal fathers, witnessed  soccer fireworks from the two neighbouring communities with age-long rivalry in the  game.

Speaking after the match, a representative of North-West Petroleum and Gas Company, Mr. Odame David, who stood in for Chief Executive Officer, Dame Winifred Akpani, revealed that the tournament  was aimed at  providing  a platform for young players  to showcase their skills.

He noted that it was part of the Corporate Social Responsibility of the organisation to its host communities.

David said  plans were on  to expand the scope of the fiesta in subsequent editions,  given the success recorded since its inception last year.
