Umar Muhammed, Lafia
The Nasarawa State Government on Monday promised to improve the salaries of players and officials of the state’s women team, Nasarawa Amazons, for emerging winners of the 2016/17 Nigerian Women’s Professional League Super 4.
Amazons defeated Delta Queens 1-0 at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium, Benin, on Friday, to emerge champions.
The state’s Commissioner for Youth, Sports and Social Development, Bamaiyi Anangba, disclosed this shortly after he received the trophy from the captain of the team, Maryam Ibrahim, at the Lafia Township Stadium.
He said, “We have discussed extensively with Governor Umaru Tanko Al-Makura and he is very happy. The package that is meant for you will be given to you all without any delay. I am happy to tell you that the governor has already accepted to place you on enhanced salary in the forthcoming season.”
In his address, Amazons chairman, Audu Nuhu, commended the club for clinching the trophy. He stated that the state government had introduced a programme to recruit more players from secondary schools in the state for the club.
Captain Maryam Ibrahim, who spoke on behalf of the players, said they were happy with the support from the state government at the just-concluded Super 4 tourney.
