Sports minister  Solomon Dalung has commended Rivers State Governor  Nyesom Wike  for sponsoring the maiden Nyesom Wike National Wrestling Championships.

Dalung said  during the opening ceremony of the  championships in Port Harcourt on Monday  the competition  was the first national competition sponsored by a state government with 700 athletes, 24 states and 12 clubs.

He said, “This is setting an agenda for Nigeria to compete in two months when we will be hosting 54 African nations.

“Rivers is the host because sports have no language, doesn’t have a political party and doesn’t know tribe too.”

The minister called for the wrestlers to take advantage of the Wike   meet to prepare for the  African championship.

He said  President  Muhammadu Buhari had decided to restore the glory of Nigeria in sports and as such, was ready to partner  anybody  ready and willing to support the Federal Government.

Dalung  appealed to Wike to mobilise other governors to support sports.

He also commended the Nigerian Wrestling Federation  for winning a silver medal in Paris and urged them to make the nation proud in the upcoming African tournament.
