He has said his department is “embracing the digital age” to showcase British business around the world, support exporters and promote the benefits of free trade.

The majority of the department’s more than 100,000 followers on Twitter are under 34, according to official analysis, and Dr Fox said it was these young entrepreneurs he wanted to reach and encourage to look abroad with their goods and services.

The digital drive has included regular “explainer” videos on Twitter and LinkedIn to provide help and guidance to professionals looking to export.

Dr Fox has also posted films online from his trade visits around the world.

At the same time, the department has launched a free digital tool to guide businesses through the export process, including how to choose the best markets.

Dr Fox said: “As an international economic department we are embracing the digital age to provide more online support for our exporters and showcase the best of British business.

“By recording short videos on location during my international visits, people get to see the work of the department and the great level of interest in UK goods and services abroad.

“It’s a little over a year until we leave the EU and we need to grab a slice of the growing markets around the world as the International Monetary Fund predicts that 90 per cent of global growth will be outside the EU.”
