John Bercow today announced he will be resigning from his positon as Speaker at the House of Commons amid another attempt by Prime Minister Boris Johnson to force a general election in October. Mr Bercow has held the position of Speaker since 2009, but after 10 years, he has decided to leave. The Buckingham MP delivered an emotional speech today explaining his reason for resigning, adding that serving had been the “greatest privilege and honour of my professional life.” But who is the outgoing Speaker married to and is she the reason he is leaving?

Why is John Bercow resigning as Speaker at the House of Commons?

Mr Bercow announced he will stand down as Commons speaker on October 31 at the latest.

However, he added that if a general election were called ahead of that date he would resign at that time.

As he delivered an emotionally-charged speech today, he was watched by his wife Sally from the gallery.

He said that he had promised his wife Sally Bercow and his children that it would be his last.

Mr Bercow said: “Colleagues, I would like to make a personal statement to the house.

“At the 2017 election I promised my wife and children that it would be my last.

“This is a pledge that I intend to keep.

“If the house votes tonight for an early general election, my tenure as Speaker and MP will end when this parliament ends.”

Later within his heartwrenching speech, Mr Bercow, on the verge of tears, thanked his wife and children for their support.

He said: “I could not do so without the support of a small but superb team in Speaker’s House, the wider house staff, my Buckingham constituents, and above all my wife, Sally, and our three children, Oliver, Freddy and Jemima.

“From the bottom of my heart, I thank them all profusely.”

Who is Sally Bercow?

Sally Bercow is a British public personality and the wife of the House of Commons Speaker, John Bercow.

While her husband became a Conservative Party MP in 1997, she campaigned for New Labour and their candidate Tony Blair, as well as helping him get his seat.

At the 2010 election, she campaigned for the election of Ed Balls as the leader of the Labur Party and even stood as a Labour candidate for the St James’s Ward of Westministr City Council unsuccessfully at that time.

These polar political views have led to Mrs Bercow falling into hot water, with The Daily Telegraph accusing her of politising her husband’s role.

However, Mr Bercow rejected these claims saying “the obligation of impartiality does not apply to my wife who is not my chattel”.

Sally and John Bercow have been married since 2002 and have three children together: Jemima, Oliver and Freddie.

Their eldest son, Oliver, has autism and she is a parent patron of the charity Ambitious about Autism.

She entered the Big Brother House as a housemate in 2011 and was the first person to be evicted.

She also appeared on a celebrity edition of The Chase and Big Star’s Little Star, with her daughter Jemima.
