“I hope FEM will help. I hope to partner with other women in a position of power, and men in a position of power, that realise none of us are free until we’re all free. None of our dreams are valid until all us are able to realise our dreams. That’s the position I’m taking!”
Janelle recently started up FEM The Future, a grass-roots project to help create more opportunities for women in the entertainment industry.
The Oscar nominee also revealed her plans for the future with her venture, amid talks of a third album.
Discussing her various projects, she explained: “I have my eye on a few things, I’ve been approached… But we’ll see. Everything is about timing, hopefully I can pick a great time and a great project!
“In the near future, I’m also excited about excited for an initiative – FEM The Future.
“Film, music, TV… We can all agree there should be a stronger female presence in music production or film and TV production. We’re out here, we’re wanting to compete at high levels, we just need to be given those opportunities.
“It’s going to be up to us, people who can shine light on it, to help lead the way.”
Janelle has been unveiled as part of the new GAP campaign, and can be heard singing an acapella version of (You) Got What I Need as she ‘meets’ a diverse selection of choirs in the Gap.
And, discussing why she decided to get involved with the campaign, she revealed she felt ‘honoured’ at being asked.
“I have never forgotten my relationship with Gap,” she added. “I always felt like Gap championed diversity in the entertainment industry – I would grow up seeing commercials with varied actors, actresses, musicians and different people from various fields, on the screen and I loved that!
“The Gap has been a part of my life since I was a little girl so it was very exciting to be involved in this campaign. It really reflects the idea that although we may be from different parts of the world, when we come together, we can create something magical.
“As often as I possibly can show unity, I’m aways going to show that! I think we have to see it, we have to see our diversity in one area, and we should try and reflect that as often as possible. Reflect that we can all make it together, that we’re stronger together.
“I was honoured – I was very honoured! I felt like my family would be excited, knowing we’ve all had our relationship with the brand. I felt like a little kid all over again, I love the message and the brand coming together, building something we can be proud of. I loved being part of the story!”
