The furious US president, speaking in Quebec, Canada, said the US had been “taken advantage of for decades and decades” by the res too the world.

Donald Trump said “we can’t do that anymore” and said it was time for the US to be treated better by the EU, Canada and other trading partners not represented at the summit.

He said: “The United States has been taken advantage of for decades and decades and we can’t do that anymore.

“People can’t charge us 270% and we charge them nothing. That doesn’t work anymore.”

He said the US was fighting for a free trade system with “no tariffs, no barriers and no subsidies”.

Mr Trump said: “That’s the way it should be.

“Tariffs are going to come way down. We’re like the piggy bank that everybody’s robbing – and that ends.”

He said “extremely productive” progress has been made during the summit so far.

Mr Trump said: “We had extremely productive discussions on the need for fair and reciprocal – meaning ‘the same’.

“I made a lot of statements having to do with clarity. We want and expect other nations to provide fair market access to American experts and we will take whatever steps are necessary to protect American industry from unfair trading practices, of which there are many.

“We’re getting them straightened out, slowly but surely.”

A French official later revealed the talks with the US were “extraordinary”.

He said: “And so began a long litany of recriminations, somewhat bitter reports that the United States was treated unfairly, that the trading system was totally unfavourable to the United States, the American economy, American workers, the middle class.

“In short, a long, frank rant which is undoubtedly very unusual in this kind of formats.”
