Funbi has succeeded in deepening and expanding the attention that has come the way of his talent with his impressive showing on ”Serenade.”

After years of honing his craft by making numerous covers and setting other people’s records on fire, Funbi eventually scored his own big hit in ‘Hallelujah’ in 2016, opening the gates into the world of the lovely voice who has been the background star in a number of Show Dem Camp‘s projects and resonating with music lovers as a member of The Collectiv3.

Funbi finally features wih his debut EP released on his birthday, November 4th and with ”Serenade”, he is able to make the music he wants to make; music that is built on emotions, feel-good vibes and expressions of love.

He delivers a much more robust and mature sound in which his fans will be appreciative of, as his infusion of the English and Yoruba languages in almost every of the song helps to make it relatable to his listeners who perhaps have experienced the same feelings his lyrics talk about.

‘Show Up’ is the EP’s opening track as he displays a deep vulnerability towards love, talking about the delicate nature of his relationship as he seeks to extend every opportunity spent with his lover, singing, ”Je ka ma logba logba yi pe, now that you’re here” [Let’s spend this time together], setting the tone for the emotional journey that the project was set to take its listeners.

The follow-up track, ‘Show Your Colour’ seems to suggest that he has been burned by the love that ‘showed up’. It is a slow sensual jam that highlights his infectious vocals as he continues the relationship theme.

The project’s title track, ‘Serenade’ speaks of his desire to literally blow away the mind of his lover, this is a special record and easily one of the favourites on the tape.

With ‘Voodoo’, he introduces the ‘Palmwine music’ feel, that breezy sound with a fusion of different vibes and the horns coming to play, it has an exotic vibe and danceable rhythm to go with it. While on ‘Body’ he welcomes the project’s first guest appearance in Seyi Shay and together they create an upbeat tempo record that will surely get you dancing.

Ghanaian singer, Efya brings the western flavour to ‘Ride With You’ and the synergy between the duo is undeniable.

After going full circle in his chase for love, the album closes strongly with the distinctly brilliant ‘I want it back’. This is the cry of a lover scorned as he demands a return of everything shared in the past. Another stand-out song, from the production to his delivery as he gives us another glimpse into the other side to his art.

Funbi has fully taken his time to deliver a worthy debut offering. This album which clocks at just 24minutes leaves you with an array of emotions, while also leaving you yearning for more.

”Serenade” is backed by great beats provided mainly by the genius that is Spax, infectious melodies, catchy hooks, rich vocals and less to no fillers making this a really strong foot through the doors of the Nigerian music industry.

In less than an hour, Funbi makes a definitive statement, showcasing a solid body of work, one that fully plays to his strength in vocal range and theme, launching him into the elite class of R&B/Afro soul artists.
