But, eating certain foods could be causing erectile dysfunction, and may even be impacting sperm motility, according to a fertility expert. Poor sperm motility could lead to infertility.
“A typical ‘Western’ diet, which includes a high intake of processed meats, refined carbs, and sweets – essentially an unhealthy diet – can have an impact on sperm motility,” said Dr Kim Clugston.
“This type of diet, high in trans-fats, may have an impact on sperm quality and also lead to weight gain.
“Being overweight or obese can alter hormone levels, lowering testosterone which can impact semen quality and contribute to erectile dysfunction or impotence.
“Excess weight accumulated around the testes can increase the temperature in this region and affect sperm production.”
Replace fried foods with nutritious foods, Clugston said.
Fresh fish contains high levels of omega-3 fatty acids, which can help to boost healthy sperm, she said.
Eating more fruit, vegetables and pulses could improve your fertility, as they’re great source of vitamin C.
Antioxidants in fruit and vegetables are also beneficial for sperm quality, with improved sperm movement, ejaculate volume and sperm concentration, the fertility expert said.
Most men will experience erectile dysfunction at some point in their lives, according to Lloyds Pharmacy.
It can be caused by Parkinson’s disease, obesity, multiple sclerosis, metabolic syndrome and Peyronie’s disease.
You’re more likely to develop impotence as you get older, but the risk is also increased if you sue tobacco, or are using certain medications.
Antidepressants and antihistamines could be causing erectile dysfunction.
