Earache is often caused by an ear infection, but other causes include ear damage, a build-up of earwax, an object in the ear and even a throat infection.
It’s not always necessary to visit your GP, and the pain will often improve in a few days, but there are a number of things you can do in the meantime at home which offer some relief.
Ginger has natural anti-inflammatory properties that Healthline says can help soothe pain from earaches.
The health information site says: “Apply ginger juice, or strained oil that was warmed with ginger in it, around the outer ear canal. Do not put it directly into the ear.”
A chiropractor could help sooth your ear ache as much as your back pain. A study titled ‘Ear infection: a retrospective study examining improvement from chiropractic care and analysing for influencing factors’ found 93 per of participants saw improvement after having chiropractic adjustments – 43 per cent of them after only one or two sessions.
Warm compresses are often used to relieve pain, and the same can be used for ear pain. Place a warm compress over the affected ear. This is recommended by the NHS.
The NHS also suggests some other ways to get relief.
It says: “To treat the pain, you can use painkillers, such as paracetamol or ibuprofen, which you can buy over the counter. Children under the age of 16 shouldn’t take aspirin.
“Your pharmacist may be able to recommend over-the-counter eardrums for your earache. Tell them about your symptoms and ask for their advice first.”
What to avoid
Eardrums or olive oils drops shouldn’t be used your eardrum has burst, and in treating an ear infection, the NHS warns.
It adds: “It’s important to avoid getting the affected ear wet if you have an ear infection.”
The NHS advises you contact your GP or local out-of-hours service, or call NHS 111 if:
You or your child also has other symptoms, such as a high temperature (fever), vomiting, a severe sore throat, swelling around the eat, or discharge from the eat.
There’s something stuck in your or your child’s ear.
The earache doesn’t improve within a few days.
