“This vitally important ministerial position is long overdue and we hope the Government takes notice and acts now.”
Caroline Abrahams, charity director at Age UK, added her support saying: “This petition calling for a Minister for Older people is really welcome.
“A member of the Government with this role could help ensure their interests are factored in when decisions are made and could also hold every Department to account for what they do, and don’t do, to help older people.”
“Our ageing population is both a challenge and an opportunity for policymakers and what we badly need is someone who will spearhead efforts to make later life better for all.”
Steve Wilkie, managing director of retirement specialists Responsible Life, pointed to the more than 10 million people over the age of 65 in the UK but with no dedicated voice within Government representing them.
“That has to change, which is why we should all be backing the Daily Express campaign for a Minister for Older People,” he said.
And Anna Dixon, chief executive of the Centre for Ageing Better, said: “It is encouraging to see so many people and organisations backing calls for the Government to listen to the voices and experiences of people in later life.”
The petition is now up and running on the Government’s petition website.
