The South-South zone of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has directed its Cross River State chapter to investigate the allegation that some members of the state executive committee and leaders have compromised by accepting patronage in form of appointments, contract awards and cash from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) led-government of Governor Ben Ayade.
National Vice Chairman of the party, Chief Hilliard Eta gave the directive at the Party secretariat in Calabar during a meeting between the zonal leaders, and stakeholders of the APC. But the Chief Press Secretary to Governor Ben Ayade says it’s nonsense.
Interestingly, a chieftain of the party and one time Chairman of Obubra Local Government Area, Pastor Chris Obase, had complained that some members of the leadership of the party in the state were receiving various forms of patronage from the PDP-led administration.
Obase, who had asked for an investigation of the allegation, said accepting contracts from the government was a signpost to anti-party activities, and an indication that some persons were already working against the success of the APC in the state in 2019.
Based on this, Eta said that such an allegation was very weighty, and would not be swept under the carpet because such acts, if proven, would be termed as the height of anti-party activities pointing out that he was one of the leaders the state had personally approached with offer of contracts.
But he he claimed that he rejected the offer because he cannot enrich himself at the expense of his integrity. He directed the state working committee of the APC to investigate the allegation in order to prove its veracity or otherwise.
Leaders of the Party in the zone, stakeholders, and members of the party who were present at the event that unanimously endorsed the decision to investigate the allegation.
Also, the Acting Chairman of the APC, John Ochala told DAILY POST on phone that “We are yet to constitute such panel or committee but we are investigating our members to know those involve. “After identifying such members, the party will constitute or set up a panel to invite them to appear and defend themselves before any action could be taken against any one.
“Investigations have various stages and if we are convinced that our members are involved in such a deal, we will do the needful. The statement directive from National Vice Chairman of the party, South South Chief Hilliard Eta was an advice.”
Reacting, the Chief Press Secretary to Governor Ben Ayade, Mr Christian Ita told DAILY POST on phone that the directive was nonsense. “We don’t operate a system of winners take it all. The system of winner takes it all is the problem we have in Nigeria today, what is wrong in that.
“Are they saying that the FG should give contract to those in APC only, is that how a country should run, there is time for politics and there is time for governance, once you win and become a governor, you are for everybody, you are not for PDP and APC only.”
