Akpokona battles Jatau for Sokoto job

Veteran coach Lawrence Akpokona is one of the 15 applicants for the vacant Sokoto United  managerial job.

The position became vacant after  coach Aminu Happy was sent packing  following his inability to guide the club from the National League to the Nigerian topflight at the end of last season.

The Sokoto State Government-owned outfit are seeking to end their time in the second tier of Nigerian football in  the upcoming season.

Former Bendel Insurance coach Akpokona was  interviewed  for the job along with  JJ Alhassan, former Super Eagles striker  Ishaya Jatau and Hamza Abare in Sokoto on Friday.

Patrick Atusu, secretary of the Lawal Ibrahim-led screening committee,  told our correspondent that  one of the coaches would be recommended to  the management of the club  for employment on Wednesday.

“We will submit the results  of the interviews with the five  coaches on Wednesday, “Atusu, who is  the  Sokoto State acting Director of Sports stated.
