Akeredolu rewards Ondo athletes with cash

Ondo State Governor  Rotimi Akeredolu on Monday  announced cash rewards  for the athletes who  won medals for the state in various competitions.

The beneficiaries include national wrestlers, table tennis players and weightlifters.

Akeredolu, who made the announcement at a lecture to mark the first anniversary of his administration at the International Event Centre in Akure, said the state government would continue to reward excellence.

Wrestling champion Odunayo Adekuoroye, John Emmanuel, Aminat Adeniyi, Maiti Taiwo and Fatimah Yusuf will each receive   N250,000 and N100,000 respectively.

Coaches Purity Akuh, Dotun Omoniyi and Mathias Sunday will get N100,000 each   for their efforts.

The athletes  who won medals  at last year’s Youth Games  in Ilorin were also  rewarded with cash gifts.

According to the governor,  gold medal winners in single events  will pick up  N40,000 each, while gold medallists  in team  competitions will be  given N30,000 per athlete .

Silver medallists  in single events were rewarded with  N30,000 each, with  silver medallists in team contests  getting  N20,000 each.

Each of the bronze medallists and non-medallists as well as their   officials was awarded N20,000.00 by the state government.

Congratulating the athletes, the governor said his administration would  continue  to continue  to focus on sports development.

Akeredolu said, “I want to advise you to run away from steroids and  other performance-enhancing drugs which are capable of truncating your careers.  I, therefore, charge you all not to rest on your laurels but always do your best in all future sporting engagements.

“You should all endeavour to exhibit the highest standard of discipline at all times, as this should be the watchword of all sportsmen and sportswomen.”
