A “24” prequel series is reportedly in the works at Fox.

According to a report by Variety, showrunner Howard Gordon and original series co-creators Joel Surnow and Bob Cochran are working on a new version of the series, which will focus on a young Jack Bauer.

Still in its early phase of development, it’s not certain if the prequel will eventually happen. But if it gets to air, it would be Fox’s third attempt at reviving the franchise.

The original series, which starred Kiefer Sutherland as Jack Bauer, was originally set to end on May 24, 2010 after eight successful seasons.

But it was renewed for a ninth season – 24: Live Another Day – which aired from May 5 to July 14, 2014.

In 2017, “24: Legacy,” a spin-off series featuring new characters, premiered. The spin-off which revolves around a military hero – Eric Carter, played by Corey Hawkins who returns to the U.S. with a whole lot trouble around him, was cancelled in June 2017.

“24: Legacy” was cancelled after one season for low ratings, but there were discussions at the time to develop a new incarnation.

“The next version of 24 probably will not be CTU, American Intelligence Agency. It will be some other venue using that same style but exploring it through a different mode,” former Fox exec David Madden had said.

There’s no news on when the prequel would air, as casting has not begun.
